A long-running debate since the pair rose to prominence has been just who is the better footballer out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, yet Ryan Giggs has admitted that it is impossible to compare the duo.
Giggs had been a teammate of Cristiano’s during Manchester United’s incredibly successful run between 2006 and 2009, winning a Champions League trophy and three successive Premier Leagues.
“I would like to say Cristiano because obviously I played with him and saw his evolution, but Messi is a genius – there isn’t a comparison,” Giggs explained in an interview with DAZN.
“Choosing between one or the other is very difficult.
“Messi is a player that you only see once in a lifetime.”
Gareth Bale’s situation at Real Madrid was not ideal during the summer transfer window, yet he has been important for Zinedine Zidane this season, and Giggs has the Real Madrid forward to thank for a point against Croatia.
“It’s very rare, from the outside it seems strange because of the quality that Bale has and because of what he has won in terms of the Champions League,” Giggs intimated.
“He was important in those successes, so it was very strange what happened during the summer.
