Defending champion Naomi Osaka ousted 15year old Coco Gauff to reach the US Open last 16 in front of a captivated crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
World number one Osaka, won 6-3, 6-0 against the home favourite and later consoled the emotional American in heart warming scenes.
Gauff matched Osaka for much of the first set, but her game particularly serve unravelled in the second set
She produced double faults at crucial times as Osaka broke serve six times.
Osaka, who added the Australian Open title to her maiden major win here last year, will face Swiss 13th seed Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.
Meanwhile Bencic, progressed after her third round opponent Anett Kontaveit of Estonia withdrew through illness.
Johanna Konta reached the US Open quarter finals for the first time by edging an unpredictable match against her opponent Karolina Pliskova.
Konta, fought back from a set and a break down to win 6-7, 1-7, 6-3, 7-5.
She will now face Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina or Madison Keys in the last eight.

The American, reached the quarter finals in New York with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Martic.
The six time champion needed her ankle restrain in a medical timeout after turning awkwardly during the final set.
Second seed Ashleigh Barty has been knocked out of the US Open with a 6-2, 6-4 by China’s Wang Qiang in the fourth round.
French Open champion Barty was out of sorts throughout, making 39 unforced errors and failing to convert all nine of her break points.
Wang, secured victory when a Barty return went long.
The 27year old is through to her first Grand Slam quarter final where she will face six time champion Serena Williams on Tuesday.
